Close Call
[fireworks]
We swerved around the mistake
a scream from the back and a wave from the cab
and suddenly, it's as if nothing happened
a swerve in time and space
a bump in possibilities
he said, don't leave me alone with Tini's bag
we swerved around the mistake
a scream from the back and a wave from the cab
as if nothing happened
omg don't leave me alone with Tini's bag
in Miami and Michigan they mutual dream
is it the 826 or the car at Laurier
it's like falling while pregnant and flying to the curb
a close call with crows overhead or
ravens complaining
flying to the curb
grape leaves keep the rain from my chair
begonias in a cyclone
he scoffs and says, not a cyclone
not not not not a cyclone, a tornado
begonias in a tornado
as the elms spit their mess on us and
squirrels invade my dreams with
footprints on a tablet
squirrels invade my dreams
They're upsetting, I wait
for arugula, for the lettuce and the blueberries
and our new lilac street view place
begonias in a tornado
begonias in a cyclone
they dream of swerving in traffic
it's a close call, a crow call, a close call
another space and time
alone with someone else's luggage
in another space and time
the blueberries are ripe
and the arugula has grown
and there's no more traffic, there's self-driving cars
he scoffs and says not a cyclone
he scoffs and splits hairs
in the windy, swampy city
the string lights on our street
and their street on his street, on her street
they think they're acorns, ah
Janet's dream:
I'm in a vehicle that's braking as it skids towards
the back of a vehicle stopped ahead
it seems an accident is imminent, inevitable
there's a sense of all of this happening suddenly
while simultaneously it seems like time slows to a crawl
and all sensation and awareness is intensified
do we stop just in time? I think we stop just inches from
the back of the other vehicle and didn't hit it
it seems it is a very close call
the huge rush of sensation is what stands out the most
like this all happens in a few seconds
Maria's dream:
I'm driving on the highway on the western part of Miami
to see Maureen and a few other psi dreamers
there is suddenly a strange man in my car standing in the
back seat with his head out the sunroof singing on top of his lungs
I'm, like, dude what are you doing? “Waiting for a Girl Like You”
come into the back seat and sing with him, I can't, I'm driving
(I have to concentrate on the road, I have to concentrate on the road)
the car seems to be self-driving
three cars at a stand still and my vehicle isn't slowing down
two cars have slowed down that are trying to go around a car
that broke down
I climb back into the front driver's seat and I'm slamming on the brakes
we're skidding and the rear of the car that
stopped in front of me is getting closer, larger
in perspective but we stop about an inch before crashing
I take a breath and compose myself, looking in my side mirror
to get into the left lane to go around the cars
The following passage by bpNichol taken from "You Too, Nicky",
"outside the window
the rumble of other journeys
planes, trains, cars passing
the feet of friends or strangers echo the unseen concrete"
